Application
Latex beads, made of polystyrene at a concentration of 5% w/v, are designed to capitalize on the unique properties of polystyrene to provide versatile functionality in various applications. The polymer's specific gravity is 1.05, ensuring consistent performance, though this might vary with copolymers or specialty grades. Its excellent dimensional stability and low moisture absorption (approximately 0.02%) make these beads ideal for use in humid environments, as they maintain their dimensions and strength. Polystyrene's nontoxic nature, when free from additives and residuals, ensures it does not support bacterial or fungal growth. With a high transmission of visible light and a refractive index of about 1.59, these beads can exhibit interesting optical effects through birefringence under polarized light. While polystyrene is brittle at room temperature and softens at temperatures above 80°C, its resistance to continuous heat ranges from 60 to 80°C, making it suitable for a broad range of thermal conditions. Often used in capacitors or coaxial cable insulation, latex beads are well-suited for applications requiring lightweight, noncompressible, and chemically inert materials.
