Application
Iodine pentoxide, 99.99% metals basis, serves as a potent oxidizing agent with diverse applications in chemical reactions and gas analysis. Its primary function involves oxidizing carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide through Ditte's reaction, effectively removing carbon monoxide from the air, a process particularly useful in respirators when combined with some sulfuric acid. The reaction proceeds swiftly at temperatures of 65°C or higher, though it occurs more slowly at room temperature. Additionally, iodine pentoxide reacts with other oxidizable substances, such as hydrogen sulfide, to produce sulfur dioxide and water. It also interacts with hydrogen chloride, metal hydrides, and various metal salts, while dissolving in water to yield iodic acid. Upon heating above 270°C, iodine pentoxide begins to dissociate into iodine and oxygen.
