Application
Hafnium chloride is primarily used as a precursor to hafnium organometallic compounds, playing a critical role in advancing various materials science applications. Its utility as a catalyst is shown through its effectiveness in promoting the direct ester condensation of carboxylic acids with alcohols. The compound is highly reactive, notably undergoing hydrolysis with water to release hydrogen chloride. Hafnium chloride can form complexes, such as a 2:1 monomeric complex with THF. Despite being colorless, aged samples may contain oxychlorides due to hydrolysis. Its solubility in methanol and acetone and its hygroscopic nature underscore the need for careful handling.
