Application
GUM GUAIAC is derived from resinous substances of trees, notably Guaiacum santum and Guaiacum officinale, native to tropical regions such as the Caribbean and parts of South America. The product appears as brownish lumps with a melting point of 85°C and is known for being insoluble in water but soluble in various solvents like alcohol, ether, acetone, chloroform, and caustic soda. The purpose of GUM GUAIAC is to serve in the detection of extracellular oxidase production when diluted in 96% ethanol, utilizing the Nobles test at a concentration of 67% (w/v). Renowned for its soft, rose-like woody odor, akin to tea roses, GUM GUAIAC encompasses essential oils obtained from the steam distillation of Bulnesia sarmienti wood. This process yields a concentrated, amber-hued oil with a distinctive fragrance, often carrying a smoky note, predominantly composed of guaiol, a sesquiterpene alcohol that constitutes 85% of its composition. Additionally, GUM GUAIAC can be prepared as a fluid extract or tincture, resulting in a reddened solution with a pleasant aroma and a sharp, bitter taste.
