Application
Glyceryl triacetate, commonly known as triacetin, serves various purposes across different industries due to its versatile chemical properties. Primarily, it acts as a hydrophilic plasticizer, enhancing the flexibility and toughness of polymeric coatings in pharmaceutical applications such as capsules, tablets, beads, and granules, with typical usage concentrations ranging from 10% to 35% by weight. In the perfumery and cosmetics sectors, glyceryl triacetate is valued as a solvent and fixative, helping to stabilize and prolong the fragrance of perfumes and flavors. Additionally, it is employed in food production for similar purposes. Notably, the compound, characterized by its colorless, oily appearance and slight odor, releases acetic acid upon hydrolysis by skin esterases, a process that holds fungistatic properties advantageous for topical treatments of minor dermatophyte infections. However, this acetic acid release is self-limiting as the process ceases when pH levels drop below 4.
