This complex formation is utilized in the BCA protein quantitation assay, where Cu2+ is reduced to Cu+ in the presence of proteins under alkaline conditions, allowing for the estimation of protein concentration. It is also effective for assessing reducing sugars and exhibits sensitivity similar to neocuproin when analyzing Cu(I).
