Acid Red 18, a deep red powder, serves as an artificial coloring food additive and dye with versatile applications. It is known for its solubility in water and limited solubility in ethanol and soluble fiber elements, while remaining insoluble in other organic solvents. In strong sulfuric acid, it turns purple and changes to red-orange upon dilution, whereas it appears yellow in nitric acid solutions. When mixed with strong hydrochloric acid, it produces a red solution, which becomes brown with the addition of sodium hydroxide. Widely utilized in the textile industry, Acid Red 18 is primarily used for dyeing wool, silk, polyamide fiber, and their blended fabrics. Beyond textiles, it is also applied in dyeing leather, paper, plastic, wood, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, and can even be used in ink production.
