Application
1,3-Propanediol, 2-butyl-2-ethyl- serves as a versatile component in the synthesis of polyesters, featuring properties that enhance the flexibility, viscosity, solubility, and hydrolysis resistance of the resulting materials when compared to traditional alternatives like neopentyl glycol. This white crystalline powder is integral in the production of polyurethane powder, coil, and can coatings, as well as other stoving enamels. It is particularly valued in powder polyester coatings for its ability to improve outdoor resistance and leveling due to its lower melt viscosity, all while maintaining a suitable glass transition temperature of at least 50°C. By reducing polyester crystallinity, this compound serves as a coglycol in outdoor-durable solventborne polyester paints, promoting high clarity and extended shelf life. In unsaturated polyester gel coats, it enhances hydrolytic stability and improves solubility in styrene. Moreover, its acrylic esters and alkoxylates are utilized in UV-curable coatings to provide better adhesion on substrates with low surface energy. Additionally, it is employed as a chain extender in elastomers, offering greater clarity and versatility in various polyurethane applications.
